Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) announced a ban on the popular short-video app Tiktok in Pakistan.

The authority said in a statement that it had “received complaints from various sections of the community against the unethical / obscene content on the video-sharing application” as the reason for the move, adding that it had issued instructions to stop the application.

“Because of the content and nature of the content being continuously posted on Tikatok, the PTA issued a final notice to the petitioner and responded to the Authority’s instructions to develop an effective mechanism for active control of illegal online and Given plenty of time to follow. The content, however, failed to fully comply with the application instructions, so instructions were issued to stop the Tiktok application in the country, ”the statement said.

The statement, however, states that Tiktok has been informed that the Authority is open to engagement and will review Tiktok’s decision under the satisfactory procedure for mediating illegal content.
